This video is a piece that is intended to look at the spaces that people walk around on a day to day basis that contain so many memories that are not visible to everyone. The idea is to portay how a memory can be in any place in the world. I have looked at just the Coventry area where I live in an attempt to portray a place that is personal to me that hold personal memory’s as well as historical ones that I may be unaware of. The idea is to raise the questions of where you live as well as what is being seen on screen in relation to this idea of what we know about places and the collective memory’s these contain. To one person it may mean so much but to somebody else so little. I find this very interesting as wherever you go places could be considered as more importance to certain individuals or in relation to the city and these are the views I am trying to express. The way I have shot the film is with very long shots of places in order for people to be able to read what they are seeing so there is time for thought and to question for the outside audience to maybe think about what may have happened in these places we see and the people on who this may effect. I have chosen to put a very basic narrative to the story as I want people to think only about what they hear and what they see in correlation. If I was to put to much in it may have been to complecated and the vision I had may not have come across.
Influences for this work has included as I have spoken about before “The Apology Line” especially in regards with the shots. With this piece I have taken a step out of my comport zone while still using my skills as a photographer to create visually pleasing and well framed shots in a very similar way to a photograph. I have put a few movements in the shot’s and I do feel these have come off well however as I have said before I wanted to keep it a simple piece in order not to confuse the audience. Another thing I felt I did well is get people questioning as I do not reveal until the end that the piece is in fact on memory’s.
If I was to tackle this again I think I would maybe have some memory’s of general people around the city played over the top of the images we see. This would be done to question the notion of whether it matters whose memory’s we hear, I would not use the memory’s to link with the buildings as such but to explain how wherever you are there will be somebody in the world that has a memory of this place. It is not relevant if the memory links to the images seen or not.
